Dora Orzag was born and raised in the Balaton Uplands region of Hungary. Influenced by her godfather, a painter, she discovered a passion for art at a very young age. Her yearning to travel and curiosity about different urban cultures has led Orzag to live in over 20 countries. Hong Kong's vertical cityscape, Tokyo's alleyways and Shanghai's ever-growing skyscrapers held particular inspiration. Incongruous architecture, where the old and the new world coexist in peaceful balance, have had a great influence on Orzag's work.
artist statement
I am inspired by the fluid, expressive style of Japanese Ä“nso paintings, the vivid abstract works of Yayoi Kusama, the soft curves and otherworldly elements of Gaudi's architecture and the beauty of nature. The concept of light is central to my work, as I am drawn to the way that it fractures and breaks as it reflects off different surfaces. The way that light interacts with each unique surface is what gives rise to the varied and beautiful colors that we see in the world around us.
Sometimes, I find myself in a familiar setting, but there is something special about it - perhaps the colors are particularly vibrant, or there is a unique sound or silence. This moment stays with me, and I feel inspired to capture it on canvas or in a sketchbook. While I am not trying to reproduce the exact landscape, I attempt to convey the emotions and feelings that the scene evoked in me through the use of color. The resulting artwork won’t resemble the original landscape, but rather reflects the experience I had in that particular moment.
I use acrylic paint on canvas to capture the energy and movement of light. I often begin with a black base as I find that the contrast adds depth and dimension to my pieces. I incorporate spherical shapes, as these elements help to convey the sense of flow and dynamism that is so characteristic of light.
Through the act of painting, I am able to make sense of the world and process my own emotions and experiences. Art has the power to provide a sense of escape and peace for people, offering a brief respite from the stresses of everyday life. It is my hope that, through my art, I can bring a sense of beauty and tranquility to others.
